Pregnancy Labelling Decision

On 11 October, the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation, agreed to introduce mandatory pregnancy warning labelling for alcoholic beverages as soon as possible.

The new labelling standard will be in the form of a mandated pictogram and warning statement, and the process of designing the standard will be led by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).

WFA is actively engaged in working with federal, state and territory governments, FSANZ and other peak bodies of the alcoholic beverages industry, to encourage a transition that minimises the impact of this change on Australian wine businesses, while meeting the expectations of the ministerial forum.

Over the coming months, FSANZ will begin the process of designing the new labelling standard. This process includes a six-week public consultation period, which FSANZ expects will commence in March 2019.  Following this consultation period, FSANZ will finalise a draft standard to be taken back to the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation for approval.

WFA will update this page as work progresses. If you are interested in participating in the public consultation please email standards.management@foodstandards.gov.au

Wine businesses can continue to use the voluntary DrinkWise logos on their labels in the interim if they choose to do so. This link will take you to a Hightail file which includes the logos and a simple style guide (no need for a subscription).
