Political Relations

The Winemakers' Federation of Australia Canberra Office was established in December 2002, with the express purpose to enhance the image and effectiveness of WFA and the wine industry generally in Canberra .

This involves meeting with relevant target groups on a regular basis to brief them on the progress, achievements and challenges of the wine industry and working with them to improve public policy outcomes for Australian winemakers.

With the exponential growth of the industry over the past decade, there has been a corresponding growth in key areas of interaction and input between the Winemakers' Federation of Australia and the Australian Government.

When WFA started operations in 1990, there were three key Federal Government portfolios that the wine industry interacted with - Primary Industries and Energy, Treasury and Health. There are now twelve portfolio groups the Federation regularly deals with:

  • Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
  • Foreign Affairs and Trade
  • Treasury (and Australian Tax Office)
  • Prime Minister and Cabinet
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Tourism
  • Small Business
  • Finance
  • Regional Development (and Transport)
  • Research and Development
  • Education and Training

As well as the key Ministers and Shadow Ministers responsible for these portfolios, WFA must maintain constant contact with other Members of Parliament from all political parties, particularly those representing wine region electorates. Departmental officers responsible for policy development and programme management and Canberra-based media representatives are also key contacts for the WFA.

The value in establishing the Canberra office is directly evident in the funding and outcomes benefiting the Australian wine industry over the past three years, including:

  • The Federal Government WET Producer Rebate
  • Funding for WFA’s Tourism Development Director and wine tourism activities
  • Funding for WineSkills I and II, providing practical business and marketing advice to small wineries
  • An increase in the Wine Grapes (Wine) levy for research and development activities
