Policy & Strategy

WFA is the peak national body representing Australia’s winemakers and plays a significant role in the development of policy that directly and indirectly affects the wine industry. In the current environment this includes a particular focus on taxation policy, advertising and labelling.

We were a joint partner in developing the Wine Australia: Directions to 2025 strategy that sets out a plan for the industry’s future and have taken the lead in driving four of the strategy’s core themes – partnership with government, financial sustainability, health and social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

We also jointly run the successful Future Leaders Program, which helps to develop the next generation of wine industry leaders through tailored training programs, and the biennial Wine Outlook Conference.

During 2008, WFA made a major contribution to the NOS Review (Review of National Organisational Structures), arguing strongly for structural change and aligned strategies that would provide for greater efficiencies. Consideration of major change has been deferred, but WFA will give priority to improving integration and communication between the major national bodies.

Stronger formal links with grape growers are being built through two important collaborations between WFA and Wine Grape Growers Australia – the release and promotion of a Wine Industry Code of Conduct (PDF) in December 2008 and the first meeting of a Joint Policy Council in April 2009.
