Innovation Policy Committee

WFA and Wine Grape Growers established the Innovation Policy Committee to ensure R&D, especially that funded by industry levy, delivers cost-effective outcomes that meet the current and future needs of the Australian grape and wine industry, consistent with the respective industry strategies Taking Stock & Setting Directions for the Australian Wine Grape Industry and Directions to 2025.

Terms of Reference

The Wine Industry Directions Innovation Alignment Panel (DIAP) will provide recommendations and advice that will enable the WFA and WGGA (on behalf of the Australian Wine Industry) to state and promote clear policy and strategy in the areas of:

  1. Setting research priorities of the Australian Wine Industry.
    • Industry’s ability to determine and clearly state research priorities and needs aligned with Taking Stock & Setting Directions for the Australian Wine Grape Industry and the Wine Australia: Directions to 2025 industry strategy.
    • Active monitoring and reporting back on the Strategic Directions Group (SDG) terms of reference, activities, priorities and performance to the WFA Board
  2. Determining funding arrangements for grape and wine research in Australia.
    • Appropriate level of R&D funding
    • Non-levy research funding
  3. Developing technology by providing usable information and processes that move the industry forward and give it a competitive advantage
  4. Ensuring uptake of research outcomes by the Australian Wine Industry.
    • Balance between research and extension
    • Regulatory environment
    • Intellectual property management.
  5. Measuring and ensuring the modernisation and effectiveness of Australian grape and wine research activities.
    • Cross institutional collaboration to ensure the maximum synergies and benefits for the industry
    • Research infrastructure within Australia – capability, collaboration, structure, integration.
    • International cooperation and collaboration
    • Cost-effectiveness of R&D delivery
    • Economic impact of R&D at the regional and national levels
  6. Aligning Australia’s internationally recognised research capability with its wine brand image.
