National Wine Foundation

Funding now available for alcohol management projects

The National Wine Foundation (NWF) is currently inviting submissions for projects which promote positive social or economic outcomes, particularly in remote, regional or indigenous communities. The NWF has grants available for up to $25,000, to support worthwhile projects where 50% of the total project cost is otherwise funded.

The NWF is chaired by former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer, and its Board comprises wine industry and community health representatives. The NWF was established with funds raised from the sale of the special Centenary of Federation Red Wine.

The successful Docker River Camel Project was the first project funded by the NWF. This initiative kickstarted a new industry, where young unemployed people in a remote indigenous community were trained and employed in various trades to capture and export camels to Asia and the Middle East.

Background
On 15 August 2001 in Sydney, the Winemakers' Federation of Australia and the National Wine Centre jointly announced that the Honourable Tim Fischer (formerly the Leader of the National Party and Deputy Prime Minister of Australia ) accepted the invitation to take up the Chairmanship of the National Wine Foundation.

The Constitutional objects of the National Wine Foundation are:

  1. To commission or fund projects which address those social problems in the Australian community, which can lead to alcohol abuse.
  2. To invest and manage the proceeds, which will be created by the National Wine Centre through the Centenary of Federation Wine Project and any other fund raising undertaken by the Foundation.
  3. To oversee and monitor the establishment and expenditure of grants for projects as determined by the Foundation and to report on outcomes to the National Wine Centre Board and the Winemakers Federation of Australia.
  4. To give priority to projects that address social issues in remote communities.
  5. To consult with government, the wine industry, the private sector, and other educational representatives on the production and presentation of material to further the objects of the Foundation.
  6. To call annually for applications from government, semi-government and private health organisations and individuals for funding support from the Foundation.
  7. To solicit, receive and accept donations, legacies, subscriptions, endowments and gifts.
  8. To affiliate, co-operate, associate, correspond or act in conjunction with any company, association, institution or organisation having objects similar to any of the objects of the Foundation.
  9. To do all other matters, acts and things as shall be or may appear to be incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects or any objects of a like or similar character.
