Environmental Sustainability
WFA plays a lead role in the Australian wine industry’s commitment to continually improve its environmental performance. We assist wineries to:
- optimise their operations to ensure resources are used and by-products generated in an ecologically sustainable manner
- meet community and customer expectations
- measure and evaluate performance.
Our major initiatives are:
WFA has a number of environmental policies. Policy direction is provided by the Wine Industry National Environment Committee (WINEC).
Internationally we are involved in several industry environmental initiatives through the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) and FIVS (the international alcoholic beverage trade association). We played a key role in developing the Global Wine Sector Environmental Sustainability Principles (PDF) and the International Wine Carbon Protocol and Calculator (see EntWine Australia carbon calculator site).
On behalf of the Australian wine industry, WFA liaises with a number of organisations on environmental matters, including Waste and Resources Action Program (UK), the World Resources Institute, the International Organisation for Standardisation (through Standards Australia) and the British Retailers Consortium.
