WFA Environmental Activities

EcoEfficiency Agreement

The Australian wine industry entered into an Eco-Efficiency Agreement with the Australian Government Department of Environment and Heritage in 2003-2004. Under the agreement, a number of EcoEfficiency Fact Sheets were prepared for the wine industry by the South Australian Wine Industry Association, and State of the Environment reports were produced in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Natural Resource Management Programme

From April 2005 - April 2007, the WFA sought funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s Sustainable Industries Programme to appoint an industry natural resource management coordinator. Funding for this position has continued, supported for an additional year by the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation, and now funded entirely by the WFA

Australian Wine Industry Stewardship

From April 2005 - April 2007, the WFA sought funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s Pathways to Industry EMS Programme to develop and implement an industry environmental management system. Since April 2007, the programme has been funded by the WFA. Australian Wine Industry Stewardship was the precursor to the EnviroWine Australia programme. Click here for more information.

Greenhouse Challenge Plus Facilitative Agreement

In January 2008, the WFA signed an Agreement with the Australian Government’s Australian Greenhouse Office to become Facilitative Members of the Greenhouse Challenge Plus programme. Click here for more information.

Signposts for Australian Agriculture

The WFA has been working with the Bureau of Rural Sciences, the National Land and Water Resources Audit and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to develop a wine industry profile as part of the Signposts for Australian Agriculture programme. Click here for more information.

EnviroWine Australia

EnviroWine Australia is the Australian wine industries environmental assurance scheme. The development of EnviroWine Australia commenced in late 2007, and is expected to incorporate vineyard and winery environmental assurance checklists, sustainability information and guidelines, and a voluntary certification option. The WFA is developing EnviroWine Australia with the Wine Industry National Environment Committee and wine company representatives. EnviroWine is due to be rolled out in 2009.
