Certification

Environmental certification provides a means for businesses to demonstrate that they meet environmental standards through a process of monitoring, management and verification.

The WFA currently recognises two environmental certification schemes for use when applying for Entwine Australia membership:

  1. Freshcare Environmental (Viticulture and or Winery)
  2. ISO 14001

If you are currently using Freshcare Environmental (Winery and or Viticulture) or ISO 14001 you will need to provide evidence of certification with your EntWine Australia membership application.

Freshcare Environmental Winery and Viticulture

WFA has customised an existing environmental certification scheme ‘Freshcare Environmental’ to create the Freshcare Environmental (Winery) Code and Freshcare Environmental (Viticulture) 2nd Ed Code. These two schemes have been specifically developed for the wine sector and provide a user-friendly practical approach to certification.

Freshcare Environmental certification comprises a one-day training course and site visit by the trainer to set up certifiable practices and record keeping on site. Once practices are in place an independent third party audit is required to complete the certification process.

Note there are separate trainers for winery and viticulture however some trainers are able to do both if you require a combined training session.

The certification process is as follows:

  1. Contact an approved trainer and organise a training session (prices and availability will vary between training providers)
  2. After training, arrange for the trainer to visit your property to assist in preparations for the audit
  3. Implement changes on property relevant to the code, training and follow up visit
  4. Contact an approved audit provider to organise an audit (prices and availability will vary between audit bodies)

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is a widely used and understood international standard for environmental management practices, providing a rigorous system of accountabilities and an annual auditing schedule. The ISO system by itself provides less practical guidance than the Freshcare Environmental certification package, and may be more costly. High quality training and auditing bodies will be able to assist in defining the practical requirements for meeting the ISO standard. For more information on ISO14001 certification visit the ISO website.
