Carbon Footprint
One of the requirements of Entwine Australia membership or preliminary membership is for operators to report their Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprints. Members and Preliminary Members report their carbon footprint details via the Membership form.
Direct and Indirect Emissions
Direct emissions are those that arise from within the bounds of your operation. These include fuel use, energy use, manufacturing process activity, mining activity or on-site waste disposal.
Direct emissions are categorised as Scope 1
Indirect emissions are those that occur in the wider economy as a consequence of an organisation's activity. The most important indirect emissions come from electricity use within the operation (eg electricity that the operation uses, where its production causes the release of greenhouse gases at another site).
Indirect emissions from electricity consumption are categorised as Scope 2
Calculating Carbon Footprints
The carbon footprint can be calculated using the Australian Wine Carbon Calculator (Recommended) or the National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting Scheme Calculator. Grape growers also can comply by reporting annual fuel, energy and nitrogen fertiliser use in their EntWine Australia Indicators instead of undertaking a full carbon footprinting exercise. This is because industry experience has shown that wine grape grower scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions are almost entirely derived from fuel, electricity and fertiliser use.
The carbon footprint data that is collected by the WFA will be used in much the same manner as the Entwine Australia Indicators.
All information will be confidential and will be used to show aggregated trends as opposed to individual operator’s carbon footprints. By collecting this information the WFA will be able to assess the industry’s environmental trends against previous years and other industries.
Reporting of a scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint by operators will be based on annual figures and must take into account the previous full financial year’s data. Operators must also ensure that if their property includes other activities not related to winemaking that these are not included in the carbon footprint. Only the activities directly related to winemaking should be included.
