WFA STAFF PROFILES

Chief Executive - Stephen Strachan
Stephen Strachan was appointed WFA Chief Executive on 1 December 2003.

Stephen started at the Federation in 1995 as Senior Analyst and was promoted to Policy Director in 1999. Prior to working at the Federation, Stephen was a Senior Research Officer with ABARE in Canberra , working on wine, horticulture and dairy issues.

Stephen's time at the Federation has been divided between policy (mostly taxation) and strategic planning.

Stephen is a board member of the Market Development Advisory Committee, National Wine Foundation and Wolf Blass Foundation.

Executive Assistant - Sharon Schmidt
Sharon commenced as Executive Assistant with the Winemakers' Federation of Australia in February 2003, providing support to the Chief Executive.

Prior to joining the Federation Sharon was employed at the National Wine Centre joining the initial project team in 1998 during the early stages of the Centre's development. Sharon was Office Manager at the Centre for five years.


Policy and Analysis

Director, Economics & Policy - Doug Young
Doug Young commenced in the role of the Federation's Policy Director in October 2003.

Doug was previously Principal Consultant of the Natural Resource Economics Team of Primary Industries and Resources SA, Rural Solutions, and has also held roles at the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies and with ABARE in Canberra .

Doug has a Master of Economics and relevant experience in natural resource (environment), economics and taxation at a senior level in Government.

Director, Natural Resources - Amy Russell
Amy joined the Federation in 2005 in the new position of Natural Resource Management Coordinator. The position has been created to manage the implementation of the Australian Wine Industry Stewardship project and to fulfil WFA's Eco-Efficiency commitments.

Amy has tertiary qualifications in Natural Resources and was previously Regional Operations Manager of the regional NRM Board in South East Queensland. Amy has also held natural resource management and organisational planning positions in Local and State Government and community-based Landcare.


WFA Canberra Office

General Manager, Policy & Government Affairs - Dominic Nolan
With extensive experience in policy development and implementation, Dom inic Nolan joined the Federation in 2000, and moved to Canberra in 2003 to take up the new position of Director, Government Affairs.

This position was established to enhance the image and effectiveness of the Federation and the wine industry generally in Canberra and covers the broad spectrum of the Federation's policy and portfolios. Dominic's role as part of the Federation Executive involves development of wine industry policy and in particular communication and collaboration with Federal Politicians, Departmental Officers and Canberra-based media representatives.

Director, International & Regulatory Affairs - Tony Battaglene
Tony Battaglene is the Federation's Director of International & Regulatory Affairs, based in Canberra . Tony's duties include government liaison, policy extension, all trade-related issues, development of industry policy and research and general wine industry strategy for the Federation. Tony represents the Australian wine industry in the government to government bilateral negotiations and leads the Australian industry delegation in a number of international fora.

Prior to joining the Federation in 1998, Tony held a number of management positions in the (then) Department of Primary Industries and Energy with responsibility for Commonwealth fisheries policy and trade issues.


National Wine Tourism

Director, Tourism & Business Services -
Robin Shaw
The position of Tourism Development Director was created in August 2002. The role focuses on coordinating and implementing projects identified in the National Wine Tourism Strategy and Implementation Plan, concentrating particularly on enhancing the prospects of small to medium winery operations in relation to wine tourism.

Robin Shaw commenced in this position in January 2004, following more than 10 years in the wine industry including as Manager of the Jacob's Creek Visitor Centre and the Australian Wine Club.

Prior to commencing with the Federation, Robin was the Industry Development Advisor (Wine & Food) at the South Australian Tourism Commission and Executive Officer for the SA Wine Tourism Advisory Board.


Finance and Administration

General Manager, Corporate Services -
Jane Zadow
Jane Zadow was appointed as the Federation's Financial Controller in December 2003 and promoted to the new position of General Manager, Finance and Business Services in March 2007.

Jane has a Bachelor of Arts in Accountancy and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia .She has approximately 20 years experience in business including public accounting (with KPMG and Touche Ross specialising in audit), finance and consulting, including 3 years working in London and Luxembourg .

Accounting Officer - Tina Bondarenko
Tina Bondarenko is the longest serving employee of the Federation. Tina was originally employed as Receptionist but also took on the role of Secretary to the Research & Statistics Officers. Throughout Tina's time at the Federation she has also undertaken the roles of Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive and Accounts Clerk.

With the introduction of dedicated Financial Controller, Tina moved back into her preferred role of Receptionist. Tina provides administration support to the organisation and is the face & voice of the Federation's Adelaide office.
